Civil Engineer (P.Eng.) & Project Manager

As a Civil Engineer (P.Eng.) & Project Manager at M2 Engineering you will be responsible for various aspects of designing civil infrastructure associated with water and wastewater systems including but not limited to underground pipelines, forcemains, site utilities, site grading and ponds. In addition, you will be responsible for aspects of civil engineering design related to commercial buildings, such as site utility plans, and site grading plans. This position requires you to assist in the preparation of studies, pre-designs, and detailed designs as well as assist with construction activities. In this position, you will work side by side our engineering team to troubleshoot problems and help find efficient and effective solutions for our clients. As a project manager, you will work with management and our clients to deliver successful projects.

This position requires experience in the design of water and wastewater underground infrastructure experience working with a multi-discipline project team. Wastewater infrastructure design tasks of this position require a thorough understanding of wastewater collections systems, lift stations, wastewater forcemains, and lagoons. Water infrastructure design tasks of this position require a thorough understanding of raw water storage ponds, pipelines, pump stations, and utility site servicing and site grading.

Project management tasks require an understanding of client relationship management, progress reporting, invoicing, resource planning, scheduling, budgeting, forecasting, and more.

Depending on the projects available, this position may require meetings out of the office, and therefore, requires driving to project meetings, when required. This position will also occasionally require field related work, and therefore, requires driving to projects sites throughout Alberta, staying overnight in hotels, and being able to work 8-12 hours a day, when required.

Proposal Writing and Project Initiation

  • Assist with the go-no-go proposal evaluation process
  • Write comprehensive proposals to meet the requirements of: RFP terms, technical scope, budget and schedule considerations, project considerations, company references, and project references
  • Prepare work breakdown structures suitable for the technical scope of the proposal, to establish: phases/tasks/sub-tasks, team, rates, expenses, budget/fees, and schedule
  • Understand M2 Engineering’s client-engineer agreements and evaluate RFP terms for potential assumptions/conflicts/exceptions/clarifications, as required
  • Ensure client-engineer agreements are in place for all projects; ensure sub-consultant agreements are in place for all projects
  • Obtain director approval for all professional service proposals prior to signing and issuing any proposal.

Project Management

  • Assist with multi-discipline coordination
  • Lead client coordination
  • Assist with client relations and client management
  • Assist with resource planning and forecasting
  • Complete monthly invoicing cycles: review/approve time and expenses for projects, prepare monthly projects reports, approve invoices

  • Execute the project to meet schedule and budget

  • Complete construction management activities, such as reviewing budgets, schedules, shop drawings, request for information enquiries, contractor progress claims, material performance test reports, etc.
  • Conduct field engineering inspections to review if construction work generally conforms to the project drawings and specifications.
  • Prepare monthly reports to document progress of construction activities, site issues, and potential design conflicts.
  • Provide proactive construction management services and attempt to anticipate design and construction conflicts in advance, and work with all parties to propose solutions to resolve conflicts and issues.
  • Review if the contractor’s work generally conforms to the quality assurance and quality control requirements of the construction contract.
  • Coordinate Request for Information (RFI) responses, including the receipt, review, and discussions with the multi-discipline design team if required.
  • Coordinate the progress of shop drawing reviews with our administration and engineering staff.
  • Assist with the commissioning of water/wastewater infrastructure

Mentorship

  • Assist in mentoring junior staff with day-to-day activities, answering questions and providing best practice guidance
  • Assist junior engineers with workflow and prioritization of tasks so that timelines and deliverables are met, and projects are completed within the budget

Qualifications


The Civil Engineer / Project Manager position requires candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Candidate must hold a valid Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Engineering. Degree in Civil or Civil-Environmental are mandatory.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in consulting engineering, specifically in civil engineering area of practice. Candidates with less experience may be considered subject to specific experience and skillsets.
  • Must be in good standing with APEGA as a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
  • Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s licence.
